Explore Helsinki with Kids: A Family Adventure Guide

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a city known for its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and a unique blend of modernity and tradition. While it’s often considered a destination for couples and solo travelers, it’s also an excellent place for families to explore together. If you’re wondering what to do in Helsinki with kids, you’re in for a treat! From sea fortresses to tasty cinnamon buns, this vibrant city offers a plethora of family-friendly activities.

Visit The Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

The Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is located just a short ferry ride from the city and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Not only is it historically significant but also a fascinating place for kids to explore. The island is filled with intriguing tunnels, museums, and breathtaking views of the surrounding sea. Your little ones will feel like real explorers as they uncover the secrets of this sea fortress.

Tip: Food options were rather limited on the island so I would recommend that you bring a picnic.

Mustasaari Island

If you are visiting in the summer, then Mustasaari Island should be next on your list. Nestled just off the coast of Helsinki, this island is an oasis of natural beauty. The lush forests, hidden trails, and serene atmosphere make it a fantastic spot for a family day out. There are rabbits and sheep on the island and some lovely walks for little legs. Mustasaari Island is a paradise for nature lovers and a great way to introduce your children to the wonders of the great outdoors.

When we visited, you were not allowed to go in the water due to the presence of blue green algae so watch out for the signs in case it is there when you visit.

Café Regatta – Cinnamon Buns

If you love cinnamon buns (and who doesn’t?!) then a trip out to Cafe Regatta is well worth the effort. The little red hut on the waterfront is famous for its cinnamon buns and cozy atmosphere. Grab a coffee and a bun and watch the world go by. Open fires ensure you stay toasty year round.

Tip: If your budget is tight, you can often buy a bag of yesterdays buns for half the price. These still taste absolutely delicious, they just aren’t warm from the oven. Look out for a little sign at the hatch that will tell you if they have them available that day

Allas Sea Pool

Even in the height of summer, the water temperature doesn’t quite reach a stage where I would be happy to swim (although many who are a lot braver than me do!). In fact, the average water temperature in August is a chilly 17.4°C. If you do fancy a swim, the Allas sea pool is heated to 27°C. There is a full 25m pool with a separate smaller children pool. With places to sunbathe all around, it’s a perfect way to while away an afternoon.

Take a Archipelago Tour

A great way to see Helsinki with kids without tiring too many legs is a boat tour. Departing from the bustling market square, this tour takes in the capital’s islands in style! Lasting 90 minutes, this tour takes you past the famous sites with a commentary about the area.

Under 5’s go free and 6-14’s are half price so this makes a family friendly price.

Helsinki Zoo

If you have an animal lover on your hands, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the zoo and Helsinki Zoo is no exception. Uniquely located on an island in the Baltic sea, the zoo has animals from every corner of the globe. Housing animals specifically equipped to deal with the harsh winter, you will see bears, bit cats, moneys and more. With a complimentary audio guide you can listen to on your phone, a trip to the zoo is an educational one.

Tip: Don’t forget to check the feeding times to make sure you see our favourite animals getting their lunch!

Visit the Beach

I have to admit, I didn’t think a trip to the beach would be on the cards when visiting Helsinki with kids but Helsinki has some fantastic beaches. If you are looking for a calm, clean, sandy beach, head over to Hietaranta Beach. It was extremely clean and as its in a bay, the water temperature was almost tolerable! There is also a crazy golf nearby meaning it’s easy to while away an afternoon here. From here you can walk to where the ferry leaves to Mustasaari Island so it’s a perfect combination.

Tip: Bring a picnic. We thought we would stop off and pick up some food for lunch but there was very little nearby and we really struggled.

Ride the Sky Wheel

Ok, I know every city has one but we’re a sucker for a big wheel! This giant observation wheel offers panoramic views that are breathtaking. Kids will love seeing the city from up high, and it’s a fantastic way to conclude your family outing in Helsinki.

Day trip to Tallin

If you really have time to pass, a day trip to Tallin is a perfect way to spend it. Possibly better suited to older children due to the long day, Tallin is well worth a visit. We actually spent a few days there but it can be done in a day with a crossing time of 2 hours. Save money on the ferry ticket by booking a saver fare from Get Your Guide, but be sure to look at the times the ticket is valid for as some tickets are only valid on some crossings.

Where to stay in Helsinki with Kids

I have to admit, we REALLY struggled to find accommodation to suit our requirements. As it was such an expensive city, we wanted somewhere self catered where we could make food at the room. By a stoke of luck, we came across Noli Studios which are a self serviced apartment set up. We had 2 bedrooms and a cooking area. They were extremely clean and comfortable and amazingly central. I would really recommend for families visiting Helsinki.
